“Hunting and Gathering: Explorations in the Process of Making a Painting”

In this 3 day workshop we will be doing some hunting and gathering around town, taking pictures, doing small sketches and drawings and meditating on options for a larger piece. Just watching the light and being a spectator in our new environment before making any decisions on what to paint in the studio.

Day 1 and the morning of Day 2: I will show you how I like to gather information to create a larger oil painting. After that you will sketch, draw, photograph and explore our surroundings. I like to do pen and ink drawings, notan sketches, small color studies and take photos. I sure a variety of medium when I gather information… acrylic, gouache and oil are favorites.

Day 2 afternoon and Day 3: I will show you how I use the images and sketches I have gathered to paint a larger studio piece that I will work on during the course of the day. We will start using the information we have gathered to create a larger finished piece. I will circulate around the studio helping individually and spending time on the larger painting.
