Art for a Cause: “Grandfather’s Farm”

I’m honored to have my painting, “Grandfather’s Farm,” as part of a special benefit auction at Meyer Vogl Gallery on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina October 29, 2026.

The event benefits Formation Project, an organization doing important work in the Charleston community to help survivors of human trafficking rebuild their lives. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute a painting to support their mission.

“Grandfather’s Farm” is a small painting, but it holds a lot within its 8 × 8 inches. Much of my work is rooted in a sense of place—particularly the rural landscapes of Tennessee and the South that have stayed with me throughout my life. I was drawn to the contrast of the dark stand of trees against the brilliant greens of the surrounding fields and the light filtering through the landscape. For me, the painting became as much about memory and our connection to the land as it was about the particular place itself.

Working with oil and cold wax medium allows me to build, scrape away, obscure, and reveal layers of paint. I love the history that process leaves behind on the surface. In many ways, it feels particularly appropriate for a painting about memory: some things remain clear while others soften and change over time.

I’m very pleased that this little painting can now serve a purpose beyond the studio and help support an organization doing meaningful work.
