Artistic Adventures of the Soul “Renew” – A Retreat for Women

Spring is the perfect time to revisit and reignite the creative spirt that lives within us. Take a break from your daily life, get away and check-in to a beautiful, nourishing environment designed to renew your mind, heart, body and soul. This will be a time to explore what inspires us, clarify our spiritual connections and delve into painting from a prayerful point of view. “Renew” is about examining what creativity means at this juncture of our lives. What does God say about creativity? Why are we given these gifts? What have other women taught us along the way? Where are we to go from here?

These are some of the questions we will explore with Reverend Betty L. Proctor and artist Rachael McCampbell for a spring retreat focused on exploring the mysteries and blessings of the creative gifts we possess. For 3 nights and 4 days, delve into your spirituality through the painting process, journaling, nature walks and intimate circles with other creative and curious women. Betty Proctor, an accomplished speaker and a gifted leader, is the pastor at United Methodist Church of Leiper’s Fork, TN. Rachael McCampbell brings her 35 years experience as a professional artist to this retreat along with years of teaching art, writing and leading groups on annual painting trips to Europe and headlining painting workshops in the US.

Beersheba Springs, TN is a gorgeous spot on the Cumberland Plateau with distant views, waterfalls, beautiful hikes and cool fresh air that enlivens the soul. The historic Beersheba Springs Assembly, built in 1854, is the centerpiece of this small community. Each guest will have their own private room and bath plus 10 full meals and snacks while on this retreat. The group will meet for vespers outside and in the chapel, meet for circle gatherings, paint, go on silent walks, and join around a campfire at night to recap each day. There will be creative exploration, journaling, hiking, resting and lots of laughter and friendships made to last a lifetime.

Space is very limited, so if you are interested, contact Rachael soon. She is accepting $200 non-refundable deposits now to hold your place. To register and sign-up, contact Rachael McCampbell. Email:

3-D Painting on Metal Mobius Strip – “Flowings”

This is a video showing a 3-D painting I designed and created called “Flowings” on a metal mobius strip. It’s oil paint – 5 1/2′ w x 18″ h x 3′ deep. It turns 360 degrees and can be seen from the inside and out. It’s an infinity painting and never ends. I painted this to benefit The Harpeth River Conservancy in Nashville, Tennessee .

I have loved painting this piece about water. It tells a story of water flowing through the atmosphere, to the mountains and streams all the way to the ocean and back. Water is one of our most precious resources and we need to protect it. The Harpeth River Conservancy protects the waters in middle Tennessee. They do such great work. The majority of the money raised to purchase this piece will go to the  non-profit. I’m honored to get to support The Harpeth River Conservancy in this way.

“Flowings” will sell this fall. If you have any interest in purchasing this original work of art, please let me know.

Our Trip to Italy Was Amazing!

Cortona Group 2019 at our last dinner together.

Workshop in Cortona, Italy

Cortona Group 2019 at our last dinner together.

Artistic Adventures Abroad recently returned from a week-long workshop/trip to Cortona, Italy with 10 amazing women! I cannot tell you what a blessed time it was to share the beauty that is Tuscany with these fine ladies. Italy had experienced a very cold and rainy May so by the time we arrived June 8-15th, the roses and poppies were in full bloom, the grasses were lush and the air was warm.

We painted as often as we could, ate al fresco in the garden overlooking the Chiana valley, went to Siena and saw important art and architecture with our fabulous guide, ate lots of pasta, drank great wine, saw gorgeous churches, painted some more, went to see where St. Francis of Assisi lived in Le Celle, climbed to the top of Cortona (whew), took many pictures, had a guide teach us art history and show us some hidden masterpieces, learned about Etruscan ruins, journaled and sketched, had a private wine tasting and education on Italian wines, painted some more, put on medieval costumes, attended the Archidado festival, dinner celebration and even danced, dipped in the refreshing swimming pool on hot days, dined in many different places– both in restaurants and at the villa with a private chef where we ate beneath the stars, we attended the “Wine, Dine and Shine” event with amazing dishes all paired with Sicilian wines and much more.

The week flew by.  The women were fun, supportive, curious, willing to take risks with their art and discuss what creativity meant in their lives. I was in awe of their paintings and their dedication to discovery. My intention was that they be open to new experiences and to find or reconnect with their creative sides–and I believe they did.

Artistic Adventures Abroad will lead another women’s only trip to Cortona in May 2020 and a trip to Kilarney, Ireland May 9-16, 2020. So stay tuned for more information about those upcoming adventures

New Video On How To Prep and Paint On Metal

Have you ever thought about painting on metal and wondered how to do it? I address that in my newest video on how to paint on a metal Mobius strip. Because I used Bondo to disguise the seam, I needed to prime it before painting. You can actually paint directly on new metal like this with oil if it’s been sanded and cleaned. It’s a wonderful surface! Try it!

Solo Exhibit of Landscape Paintings to Benefit The Land Trust For Tennessee April 14, 2019

Please come join us for an afternoon of celebration and art!

The Land Trust for Tennessee has protected our open spaces for over 20 years now! From family farms, to city parks, to forests spanning thousands of acres, the work of The Land Trust has a lasting impact on people and places from Memphis to Johnson City.

Having grown up on a farm in East Tennessee, I have always felt a strong connection to the land. I was fortunate enough to grow up on a beautiful farm with views of both the Cumberland Plateau and the Smoky Mountains. A branch of the Tennessee River ran through part of it–the rolling hills and forests were stunning. In about 1983, our farm was taken by the county to build a large industrial park. As our farm was like a third parent to me, this event deeply affected me. It was a huge loss to see this beautiful property get demolished and covered over with roads and commercial buildings. I wish it had been preserved. That’s why I want to help the Land Trust of Tennessee continue its good work. They are committed to helping our state make wise choices for land preservation. Development is inevitable but there are smart ways to do it while still considering the needs of our flora and fauna, keeping clean water sources and aesthetic views. I was honored by this invitation to paint a series of paintings inspired by these protected lands. I have enjoyed painting streams, fields, skies and buildings too for this exhibit. Tennessee has breathtaking views wherever you go. We are blessed by the natural beauty that surrounds us–my prayer is that we can hang on to these lands for our children’s children.

A portion of the sales of my art will benefit the Land Trust. So please come to this event at Westhaven Realty, 1001 Westhaven Blvd. Suite 100, Franklin, TN 37064 to see my latest works.

Reception: April 14th, 3 -6 pm at Westhaven Realty (McCampbell will be there from 1 – 6 pm)

Show dates: April 14 – 28, 2019, Monday – Saturday 10 am – 6 pm, Sunday 1 -6 pm
